Tagged Photos Do Not Appear In the Blog Immediately and I am not using a Cache Plugin

There is a delay of between a few seconds and several hours between a photo being tagged on Flickr and it appearing on the blog.

Solution

The problem resolves itself without any action being taken.

So the easy solution is to do nothing and wait.

However, if like me you are impatient, one way to investigate is to check out the Flickr RSS feed for your tagged photos. If the RSS feed is up to date then the issue is to do with caching on your site WordPress. If the RSS feed does show all the photos you expect then the delay is on the Flickr side and there is not much you can do but wait.

To check out your Flickr RSS feed, substitute 12345678@N00 by your Flickr ID and “bahamas” by your tag in the following URL and browse using Firefox or Internet Explorer for best results.

Slideshow not appearing correctly as a Teaser on the Home Page

When I used the slideshow option for my post, it looked great in the post itself, but on the Home page it actually displayed medium sized images of ALL the photos, not just one. To explain further – in the Post itself, there was only a single photo image, and it cycled in a slideshow as it should; while on the Home page (which shows recent posts, with excerpt set for the first 100 words), all the photos were visible. This of course was not good for the Home page, which should show just teaser excerpts for the posts. When I used the gallery option instead of slideshow, the Home page looked fine.

Solution

A temporary workaround would be to use a manual excerpt for this post that includes a single image rather than the slideshow. This is still under investigation awaiting feedback from the logger of this problem.

Hi Russell,

You are absolutely right. I uploaded some imgs. to Flickr last night and thought that I had a tagging issue. When I booted up this morning all my slide shows were on my site and working.

Q). Is there any way I can get images hosted on Flickr to display at a slightly larger size?
( My field is Automotive Design, so I do need big images to show off the detailed work content.)

Hi Graham,

You can use size=”large” or size=”original” as a parameter on the slideshow for bigger photos with a couple of caveats:

1) The size=”large” works well ONLY if you have large photos on Flickr. Slickr Flickr only shows what flickr can give it. If the plugin asks for a large photo and if Flickr does not have a large version of the photo you get a ‘photo not available’ slide. You can check what size you have on Flickr by editing the photo and clicking on the All Sizes link

2) The size=”original” works but the presentation will not be good UNLESS you have all your original photos of the same or very similar size. The slideshow can look a bit rubbish is you have a mix of photos of different sizes and different orientations. However if all your photos are the same size it will look fine.
